How to Choose Your Garden Gate

Choosing the right garden gate is about finding the best balance between style, size, material and practicality. This quick guide will help you select a gate that fits your space, suits your home and installs with confidence.

Step 1
Measure Your Opening Correctly

Accurate measurements are essential to ensure the right fit.

  • Measure the width between walls or posts at the narrowest point
  • Measure the height from ground level to the top of the opening
  • Allow for hinges, clearance and posts where required

Before ordering, refer to our Measuring Guide video for a clear, step-by-step explanation on how to measure your opening correctly and avoid common mistakes.

Step 2
Choose the Right Gate Material

Each material offers different benefits:

  • Aluminium garden gates – Lightweight, rust-free, low maintenance and ideal for modern UK homes.
  • Composite garden gates – Wood-effect appearance with enhanced durability and minimal upkeep.

Both options are designed for British weather conditions and
long-term outdoor use.

Step 3
Select a Gate Style That Suits Your Home

Your gate should complement your property and surrounding fencing.

Popular styles include:

  • Vertical solid infill – Clean, timeless and private
  • Horizontal solid infill – Contemporary and modern
  • Diagonal infill – Distinctive with added character
  • Open-top mixed infill – Lighter appearance with visibility

Step 4
Decide on Posts, Fixings & Fittings

Consider how your gate will be installed:

  • Wall-mounted or freestanding aluminium posts.
  • Receiver posts for secure closing.
  • Matching hinges, latches and fixings.

Using matching posts and hardware ensures a consistent finish and smoother installation.

Step 5
Check Sizes & Made-to-Fit Options

Our gates are supplied in standard ready-made sizes, with flexible options available:

  • Custom width adjustments.
  • Aluminium posts in multiple sizes.
  • Optional RAL or BS colour finishes.

This allows you to achieve a tailored fit without full bespoke lead times.

Step 6
Think About Use & Access

Ask yourself:

  • Is this for a side entrance, garden access or pathway?
  • Do you need privacy, security or visibility?
  • Will the gate be used frequently or occasionally?

These factors help determine the most practical design for everyday use.

Product & installation questions

Will this gate fit my opening?

Each gate is supplied in a set frame size. Please measure your brick-to-brick opening carefully and compare it with the size guide on this page. If you’re unsure, email our customer service team with photos and measurements.

Do I need posts for this gate?

You can fix the gate to existing brickwork or to aluminium posts. Posts are not included as standard – if you need them, please see our Aluminium Posts range or contact us for advice.

Can I install the gate myself?

Yes, a competent DIYer or installer can fit the gate using the supplied hardware. We recommend two people for lifting and fixing. Please follow the installation guide and video on installation guide page.

How much maintenance is required?

Our aluminium and composite gates are designed to be low maintenance. They do not rust or rot and don’t need repainting. We simply recommend washing them down occasionally with mild soapy water and checking the hinges and fixings once or twice a year.

Can you cut the gate to a custom width?

Yes, we offer a custom width cutting service on selected gates. Choose the Custom width cut option on the product page and enter your required finished size in millimetres. We will trim the gate to suit and finish the cut edge so it’s ready to install. Custom-cut gates are made to your measurements, so they can’t be returned or exchanged unless faulty. Please double-check your opening size before placing your order or contact us if you’re unsure.

Can I order a custom colour?

Yes, we can supply gates in custom RAL colours on request. If you would like a non-standard colour, please contact our customer service team with the RAL code from the RAL colour chart and the product details. We’ll confirm availability, lead time and pricing before you place your order.

What warranty do you offer?

All Readymade Gates products are covered by our standard 5-year manufacturer’s warranty.

For full details on what’s included and the warranty period for each product range, click here to download our Warranty Guide (PDF).

Do you provide an installation service?

We do not currently offer an in-house installation service. Most customers use a local builder, landscaper or gate installer to fit their gate. We’re happy to provide general guidance.

What are the delivery times?

Standard delivery for ready-made gates is normally 7–14 days.

If your order includes custom modifications (such as custom width cutting or special colours), delivery is usually 7–21 days.

Lead times can vary by postcode and order size, so please see our Delivery Information page for the latest details.

Does the gate come with a lock and handle?

Yes. Our pedestrian gates are supplied with a lock and handle set as standard, along with the necessary fixings. Posts are not included unless specifically stated and can be purchased separately.

Can the pedestrian gates be hinged to the left or right?

Yes. The pedestrian gates can be fitted to hinge on either the left or the right, depending on your opening and how you would like the gate to swing. Your installer will position the hinges and latch to suit your layout.

How do I measure the width of gate I need?

Start by measuring the clear distance between the pillars or posts where the pedestrian gate will be installed. Measure the brick-to-brick (or post-to-post) opening in millimetres.
